Yes the racist Southerners, Bull Conner and his ilk were Democrats. When LBJ signed the civil rights legislation, and told the racists this was not what they wanted, but it was the best deal they could get, they were not “gonna” accept it. Even LBJ knew that and was reported to say that he had lost the South for a generation. He was quite perceptive, of course, and the racists simply re-registered in the other party. So now we have racist Southern Republicans who have little if any connection to the party of Lincoln. This is a genuine “pants on fire” lie. Republicans deal with blacks as equals, if equality means the same as it did to the French during the Reign of Terror. Tumbrills roll, and then heads. Sure Mr. Cain is running, sure Rance Priebus’s predecessor was employed. Tokens! As Muhammad Ali once commented, more blacks should support Republicans, because they would not do anything for blacks (or anybody else) who didn’t do stuff for them. The Republican party as it now exists is totally amoral. They are owned by the highest bidder, and have no principles other than “hip national bank.” You ask why I have not quit the party. Part inertia, part hope for reform. People go to prisons to attempt reforms; hard to tell if it is wasted.
